TABOO - The swear word of the sex toy industry!

What even is taboo?  And how did it become a word that is used when we talk about things that people just don’t want to talk about?  Or people don’t feel comfortable talking about?

Wikipedia tells us that: A taboo is an implicit prohibition on something (usually against an utterance or behavior) based on a cultural sense that it is excessively repulsive or, perhaps, too sacred for ordinary people. Such prohibitions are present in virtually all societies.

Women, in particular, have been told for generations what they should and shouldn’t do with their bodies.  It is one of society’s favourite things to do.  ‘Never talk about your period’,  never ever buy, talk about or look at sex toys or any sex products for that matter.

Why is buying a vibrator or sex toys still so taboo in todays society?

Even after coming a long way in recent years in the way that people have started to view sexuality, especially in women, people are still concerned and very private when it comes to talking about such topics as sex toys, vibrators and their sexual wellbeing.

Vibrator sex toy

Dildos were invented before humans had even invented the wheel!! They have been around for a very very long time so why are we still not comfortable talking about our vibrators and stimulators?

Sex toys can have a very positive impact on people's lives.  It can make them feel more comfortable with their bodies and that is a wonderful thing right?

So, taboo or not taboo?
The adult sex toy industry has been around for a very very long time and it is not going anywhere fast. Sex toys help people achieve pleasure in their personal life so why not shout it from the rooftops (or from your own bedroom)!
We shouldn't have to whisper to our girlfriends about the new 'Vibrator' or 'Personal Massager' we invested in, just like there should be no taboo around talking about periods, tampons and pads.
As a society talking more openly about sex and our own arousal should be a given! It is a normal part of our human existence.  We wouldn't be here without it would we?
Check out this amazing book written by a woman who is making a case for breaking the sex-toy taboo issue!  The book called 'BUZZ' is a stimulating history of the Sex Toy. Some interesting 'taboo' night time reading for you all.
